Multicarrier Systems Based on Filter Banks

Multicarrier modulation is the key technology for the physicallayer of current and future broadband communication systems. Filter bank based multicarrier systems (FBMC) offer an increased bandwidth efficiency and an improved spectral confinement compared to conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with cyclic prefix (CP). The spectral shaping of the subbands leads to a beneficial robustness against narrowband interference, simplifies the suppression of carrier frequency offsets and Doppler effects and facilitates the dynamic spectrum access.We derive efficient, DFT-based implementations of filter bank structures and illustrate general aspects like the power spectral density, the peak-to-average power ratio and the perfect reconstruction condition.In the main part we develop a framework encompassing analytical solutions for efficient linear and nonlinear equalization schemes which minimize the mean square error (MSE) for the symbol decisions in O-QAM FBMC systems.Adaptive equalization algorithms tailored to the needs of O-QAM FBMC systems extend this framework of analytical minimum MSE schemes afterwards. The adaptive equalization schemes are based on the (normalized) least mean square algorithm (LMS) and the set-membership normalized LMS.Finally, comparisons with the state-of-the-art wireless communication standards 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) and WiMAX, which are based on CP-OFDM, highlight the practical relevance of the proposed solutions.

In this thesis a new concept of continuous wave (CW) Lidar for detection of scattered light from atmospheric aerosol particles is presented. It is useful in particular for remote sensing of wind velocities but can be easily applied to the fields of remote vibrometry and differential absorption lidar (DIAL) as well. It is based on a low-coherence interferometric setup powered by a synthetic broadband laser source with Gaussian power density spectrum. The laser bandwidth is electronically adjustable and determines the spatial resolution which is independent of range. The Lidar system inherently offers strong discrimination between signal contributions from different locations and has no moving parts. The location to be re solved can be shifted numerically after the measurementmeaning that a singlemeasurement already contains the full range information. These features of constant resolution and numerical range scanning are in sharp contrast to conventional CW Lidar systems. Despite strong suppression of signals that are not of interest, spurious reflections from inside the setup can be extremely large when compared to the weak scattering signals to be detected and should be kept as low as possible. To remove the remaining impact of such disturbances, the system offers an elegant solution through a numerical shift/filtering/backshift procedure.

The intrinsic capacity of the properly - signed NES to promote rapid localization of externally applied (narrowband) - bration or (broadband) shock energy to itself, where it can be captured and dis- pated, provides a powerful strategy for vibration control and the opens the pos- bility for a wide range of applications of TET, such as, vibration and shock i- lation, passive energy harvesting, aeroelastic instability (?utter) suppression, se- mic mitigation, vortex shedding control, enhanced reliability designs (for ex- ple in power grids) and others. The monograph is intended to provide a thorough explanation of the analytical, computational and experimental methods needed to formulate and study TET in mechanical and structural systems. Several prac- cal engineering applications are examined in detail, and experimental veri?cation and validation of the theoretical predictions are provided as well. The authors also suggest a number of possible future applications where application of TET seems promising. The authors are indebted to a number of sponsoring agencies.

This monograph highlights a comprehensive account of the three-dimensional analysis and design of reactive (rigid-wall) elliptical cylindrical mufflers for automotive applications. A general solution of the Helmholtz equation in elliptical cylindrical co-ordinates is presented in terms of the Mathieu and modified Mathieu modal functions. This is followed by tabulation and analysis, for the first time, of the parametric zeros and the corresponding non-dimensional resonance frequencies of the transverse modes of a rigid-wall elliptical waveguide for a complete range of its aspect ratio. The modal shape patterns of the first few circumferential, radial and cross-modes are examined along with the significance of the associated pressure nodal lines in context with location of inlet/outlet ports. (Additionally, the Appendix tabulates the non-dimensional resonance frequencies of a clamped elliptical membrane for a complete range of aspect-ratio.)A theoretical formulation is then outlined for characterizing single-inlet and single-outlet (SISO) elliptical cylindrical chamber mufflers with arbitrary location of ports, either on the end face or side surface. The ensuing chapters are devoted towards analyzing the Transmission Loss (TL) performance of different configurations, namely, (a) the straight-flow or flow-reversal mufflers having inlet ports on the opposite or same end face, respectively, (b) mufflers having an end/side-inlet and side/end-outlet as well as (c) mufflers having a side-inlet and a side-outlet. The analytical framework explains how to exploit the principle of suppression or excitation of certain transverse (evanescent) modes by locating the ports on pressure nodes of these modes towards achieving a broadband TL performance. On this basis, design guidelines are then formulated in terms of optimal port locations for the aforementioned configurations, in particular, for short straight-flow/flow-reversal elliptical end-chambers that yield a broadband attenuation, a practically useful outcome for an automotive muffler designer. Furthermore, the validity of the one-dimensional transverse plane wave theory in the low-frequency range for short chambers is explained by observing the first few transverse mode shapes and through the three-dimensional Green’s function’s formulation. Some directions for future work are also indicated towards the end.  In summary, this monograph is a one-stop solution for a practicing automotive engineer designing mufflers, applied mathematicians studying acoustic wave propagation in elliptical geometries, and also for students of engineering acoustics.
